We could heat our homes with wind power!

This month, yet again, we've seen shocking reports of gas companies making millions in profits, while their price hikes push people into fuel poverty.*

Today, we're showing the government that a positive solution for clean, cheaper home heating is within reach. If our politicians act now, the UK could keep homes warm and heating bills down, with locally produced clean energy.

We teamed up with energy experts to explore the potential to heat the UK’s homes with heat pumps powered by community wind power.

It’s good news - we found that this would cost less (bills could be cut by nearly a third) and be much better for our climate (cutting emissions by up to 90%)! But to get on with clean affordable heating, we need the government to act.

For too long, government policy has slowed progress towards the clean energy we need, and let the UK’s windy weather go to waste.

Government policies, including senseless planning barriers on wind power and a lack of support for community heat, make it unnecessarily difficult to get local clean heat and electricity projects going. This is keeping our homes cold while our climate heats up.

Together, we can change this.

Thanks to ordinary people emailing their MPs, we’ve already removed some of the barriers to wind power in the UK. In autumn last year, after thousands of us asked our MPs to remove the barriers to onshore wind projects in the UK, government decision makers agreed to weaken the planning restrictions. This shows that writing to our MPs works, and we should keep it up!

There are still huge barriers to setting up local renewable energy projects. So we need the government to go further, and make way for the clean energy transition that we need.

We’ve created a simple tool to make it easy for people across the country to send our report to their MPs and ask them to take action for cleaner, cheaper home heating.
