It worked - MPs have backed the new Carbon Budget.
Yesterday, our politicians gathered in the Houses of Commons to debate the Seventh Carbon Budget. Good news - they voted in favour of climate action!
The UK government has just made a legally-binding commitment to cutting carbon emissions by 87% by 2042, meaning we’ll see more climate-supportive policies for years to come.
A huge thank you to the hundreds of you who emailed your MP in advance of yesterday’s debate urging them to vote in favour of the budget.
Without people like you taking action to show your MP that climate action is important to the UK public, we might not have won yesterday.
94 MPs voted against the carbon budget. This was the highest level of opposition of any carbon budget in UK history, and a clear sign that we have work to do.
If this heatwave has shown us anything, it’s that climate action can’t wait. 39 degrees in June is not normal. Children are being sent home early because their schools are too hot to be safe. Bus drivers are sweltering in unbearable cab temperatures. People in care homes are at serious risk of death or illness due to the heat.
Yet, not everyone is on our side. The budget faced opposition from those who want to delay - or ditch - climate action. Fossil fuel interests, polluting corporations, those that benefit from the status quo, and don’t care who suffers. That’s why it’s so important that we do what we do.
Together, we showed MPs that climate action matters to their local constituents - and it worked. Enough MPs backed the Carbon Budget.
