Five climate wins from the past month
It’s the start of June and summer has arrived in full pelt. High temperatures over the last few weeks have left many of us worrying about the climate crisis and what’s going to happen in the years to come. At times, this challenge can feel overwhelming. But at Possible, we’re stubbornly optimistic.
Together, we are working towards building a cleaner, fairer UK where communities and nature can thrive.
Step by step – we are getting there.
Here are five things we achieved together last month.
1. We’ve made climate-friendly travel easier for public sector workers.
Last month, we convinced our first public sector body to offer their staff paid ‘journey days’ on top of annual leave for flight-free holidays. We’ve worked for years to bring Sustainable Travel Leave into the public sector, with many organisations hesitant to be the first to commit - so this is a major breakthrough. Thank you to the Northern Irish Local Government Association for taking that first step. By setting a precedent, this could help unlock climate-friendly holidays for hundreds of thousands of public sector workers across the UK.
2. We used the local election to secure climate wins.
From organising climate-focused hustings to asking candidates to sign environmental pledges, we made sure climate stayed at the top of the agenda during the May 7th elections. A huge thank you to everyone who helped us get local decision-makers to commit to bringing down carbon emission in their constituencies.
3. Public support for banning private jets is soaring.
With talk of airlines cancelling flights due to a jet fuel shortage, we were able to build public support for a ban on private jets. Tens of thousands have signed the petition, hundreds have emailed their MPs, and the campaign is making headlines everywhere from the Independent to the Daily Mail. Thank you everyone for being part of this. If you haven’t yet emailed your MP, use our webtool today – let’s make this happen.
4. We’ve cut tonnes of carbon by fixing our electronics.
May was a month of celebration for the Fixing Factory team, from Hackney Fixing Factory’s first birthday to getting our incredible impact stats (see how much carbon we’ve saved!). We’ve also just opened bookings for our nine-session repair course that’ll leave you feeling confident fixing all sorts of household electronics - if you’re interested, find out more here.
5. Our community has stepped up to support our work.
Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who’s taken on our Raise It For The Climate challenge – you are amazing!
From hosting events to hiking arduous journeys to (literally) crawling through mud, our supporters stepped up last month by raising over a thousand pounds for our work already and bringing more people on board with the movement. Ready to step up? It’s not too late to be part of this. Find out more using the link below.
Thank you for everything you do.
Every email sent, policy shared, and conversation started adds up. This is what climate progress looks like — practical, collective, and happening right now.
Love what we’re doing?
