Help your team travel cleaner

Sustainable Travel Leave (STL) is a low-cost, high-impact workplace policy from Possible.

Forward-thinking employers support staff to choose low-carbon travel for their holidays - such as train, coach or ferry - by offering a small amount of paid travel time to cover the extra time often required to travel by land or sea compared to flying.

Over 200 workplaces have implemented a Sustainable Travel Leave policy already, from small charities to major brands, and employers are reaping the benefits.

This simple yet powerful policy helps cut emissions, boosts employee satisfaction, and signals that your organisation is serious about employee wellbeing and its environmental and social responsibilities.

  • Flying is one of the fastest-growing contributors to climate change, and for those who fly, it’s the most polluting thing they’ll ever do.

Thankfully, we know that 67% of UK flyers say they want to fly less. But limited time off work is one of the biggest barriers preventing even highly motivated individuals from choosing flight-free travel for their holidays.

Sustainable Travel Leave (STL) removes that barrier, making low-carbon holiday travel possible for more people.

    • Negligible business impact: We know from six years’ worth of data from almost 200 employers that the average amount of additional time off equates to just 3 minutes per employee per month.

    • Attract and retain talented people: Over 70% of workers under 40 consider a company’s climate policies before accepting a job.

    • Boost motivation and wellbeing: 74% of employers with an STL policy in place say it has helped to increase employee motivation and satisfaction.

    • Show climate leadership: A visible, measurable action that supports your ESG goals. Employers can access Possible’s Sustainable Travel Employer accreditation, and we can support with highlighting your commitment externally.

  • We make implementing a Sustainable Travel Leave policy extremely simple. This service is offered free of charge, and has been designed to work with any existing HR systems and processes already in place.

Here’s an overview of the whole process:

    1) Choose your approach: You can implement STL as a standalone policy, or integrate it into a new/existing ‘Supported Leave’ policy, allowing colleagues to choose whether they use the time offered to either volunteer for a charity, or to reduce emissions by opting for low-carbon travel.

We’ll provide everything you need to implement your STL policy, including a bespoke template policy, employee procedure documents and roll-out materials. These can all be tailored to match the language and tone already used within your organisation.

    2) Get your policy signed-off internally: We’ll support your HR and management teams through the approval process.

    3) Launch together: We’ll help you to roll it out with internal comms, staff sessions, and ongoing support. We can also support with announcing the policy externally.

  • In addition to helping you to implement an STL policy, we’ll also provide access to the following additional support and benefits:

    For employees

    • One-to-one support for planning flight-free holidays

    • Exclusive discounts on eco-friendly holidays, things like e-bike hire, Brompton bikes, carbon literacy training, vegan brownies and other products/services

    • Monthly newsletter with travel inspiration, giveaways and tips

    • Invitations to member events

    • Access to the STL Portal with resources, tools and route planning

    For employers

    • Ongoing HR and operations support

    • Sustainable Travel Employer accreditation

    • Annual impact report estimating your team’s carbon savings

    • Access to press and media opportunities

This is all offered free of charge to participating organisations.
