Take part in our citizen science project: ask people in your city what they think of low traffic neighbourhoods

Community campaigning starts with listening - so that’s what we’re doing. We’re starting a citizen science project in which our Car Free Cities campaigners and local volunteers go to streets where through-traffic has been blocked for some years, and find out what people who live there think of these historic (pre-2015) traffic filters. This research will:

  • Equip us with an evidence-based understanding of how communities feel about low traffic neighbourhoods - helping build awareness and trust about how road use can change.

  • Raise any concerns communities have about low traffic neighbourhoods and their implementation - enabling us to develop solutions and strategies for reducing car use that work for communities

  • Give a voice to affected communities - avoiding conflict or alienation from climate action.

We want to build our movement on grassroots engagement, and that means we need your help! Click the headings below to expand the content.

+ What’s involved in volunteering?

We are recruiting small groups of people to go to specific streets in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and London in June and July to knock on doors and ask residents to answer a few questions as part of our survey.

  • Birmingham: Saturday 10th July and Saturday 17th July
  • Bristol: Saturday 3rd July and Saturday 24th July
  • Leeds: Saturday 10th July and Saturday 31st July
  • London: Thursday 15 July (Leytonstone), Saturday 17th July (Walthamstow) and Saturday 24th July (South Chingford)

If you’re interested, please submit a volunteer form (at the bottom of this page)**. Our campaigner in your city will then be in touch with you and will let you know more about the volunteering times, locations and what's involved.

There will be a number of volunteering shifts to choose from. Sessions will take place in the daytime, and each shift will be no more than two hours long, with regular breaks built in.

Volunteers will always work in pairs (why not recruit a friend to join you?)

We will be walking or wheeling from door to door - so please note volunteering involves physical activity for up to two hours at a time.

The survey will be neutrally worded, and volunteers will be able to record responses on a smartphone, tablet or a printed recording sheet.

When there is no answer at a door, volunteers will leave a calling card containing all of the relevant information, which includes a link to complete the survey online.

Limited travel and refreshment expenses will be available.

+ What skills will I need?

No prior experience of door to door volunteering is required as all volunteers will receive a full briefing with everything you need to know.

+ I’d prefer not to or I am unable to knock on doors, is there any other way I can help?

We’re also looking for help recruiting local volunteers. Do you know anyone that might be interested? Or are you connected with any networks that you could share our project with? If so, please sign up so we can send you everything you need to spread the word. We are particularly keen to recruit a cohort of listeners who represent our cities - the more diversity the better.

If you want to volunteer yourself or mobilise others, please complete this quick form and your local campaigner will be in touch:
