Join us in saying 'NO' to Heathrow’s third runway
Want to stop a new, dangerously polluting project getting built?
Right now, the government is asking people for their views on Heathrow Airport’s reckless expansion plan.
This is our chance to tell them it can’t go ahead.
For over twenty years, Heathrow Airport has been asking our government to approve its plan to build a new runway and add 250,000 more flights a year.
If it gets the green light, Heathrow’s proposed expansion will:
-
The proposed 250,000 additional flights will mean an extra 4.4 million tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions every year. Given that the government’s own climate advisors have made clear that the UK needs to reduce current levels of air travel in order to reach our climate targets, it’s incomprehensible that an expansion of this size is even up for discussion.
-
Last month, the UK Department for Transport analysed the projected economic impact of Heathrow’s proposed expansion, and found that any benefit would be outweighed by massive trade-offs that could set the UK back by as much as £62.5 billion.
-
Air pollution already costs the NHS a whopping £27 billion every single year, and air travel is a major contributor to this. More flights means more air pollution. That means more cases of cancer, heart disease, strokes, dementia and a number of other health conditions. This will mean additional pressure on an already struggling NHS - we simply can’t afford this.
-
In addition to the air pollution mentioned above, communities living near Heathrow Airport will also be faced with even more noise and disruption in their daily lives. From early in the morning until late at night, flights over homes and communities cause havoc. They impact concentration and disturb our sleep. And this will only get worse with 250,000 more flights per year.
Despite considerable opposition, including previously being taken to court by environmental groups, it's looking like the current government wants to give Heathrow the go-ahead.
This would be a disaster - for our climate, for our health, and for the UK economy.
That’s why this public consultation is so essential.
If enough of us respond to this consultation, we can make it clear to decision makers that Heathrow’s proposal doesn’t have public support, and put pressure on them to stop it from moving forward.
This is not just about Heathrow.
This decision on Heathrow Airport won’t just shape one airport. It will set the direction for future expansion - and our health, wellbeing and climate - for years to come.
As we swelter in unprecedented heatwaves, it’s clear that action on climate cannot be delayed. Together, we must stop polluting projects like Heathrow’s expansion plans from getting the green light.
Will you stand with us, and the thousands of others who oppose reckless airport expansion plans, by responding to the consultation today?
